Edinburgh to North Queensferry

Three years ago I suspended my journey at Edinburgh’s Waverley Station. Returning mid-Sunday afternoon, I found my nearby hotel and set off walking through the New Town towards the Firth of Forth. I fell in with a young man originally from Cornwall and now a local resident. He has a wild plan for a relay team dressed as Roman soldiers running along Hadrian’s Wall to raise funds for wounded armed forces personnel.

I walked by the edge of the sea towards the Forth Road Bridge, its distant towers peeping over an intervening hill. The further I walked the wetter and windier was the weather. My coat and over-trousers kept me dry, but the afternoon held little pleasure. As the westerly wind increased to gale force, I abandoned my objective of crossing the water to North Queensferry and returning by train. A bus came along, and I rode slowly but thankfully into to the wind-whipped city centre.
