The Missing Link

I am indebted to Bryan Smyth of Fowlis, near Dundee, for his diligence in identifying walking routes from Dundee to Kirriemuir and Alyth. I intended to go over the high ground to Braemar by Jock’s Road, which rises to 3000 feet, and Bryan sent me helpful information which I still plan to use, maybe this year if I’m lucky.
From Braemar my plan was to walk the Lairig Ghru to Loch Morlich, an unattractive proposition in snow. My onward route would take me via Carrbridge and Tomatin to Inverness, but I’d considered a host of alternatives, including a far from obvious suggestion by an experienced backpacker. The easier and more direct routes involve forest walking as well as proximity to the A9 and railway, whereas the quieter, tougher routes traverse country that knows few footfalls. I feel I have to review my options before I cover the Loch Morlich to Inverness section.
